Overalls cause of strike
PA Auckland A motor plant strike over a pair of torn overalls was still not patched up last evening and 180 workers remained suspended. Engineers’ Union representatives could not be reached for comment last evening, but it is believed that a meeting of members at the New Zealand Motor Corporation’s Panmure factory is planned for today. The manager of the plant, Mr Austin Taylor, said last evening that a worker in the trimming department had torn his overalls and demanded that the company repair them immediately or provide a new pair. “The company followed normal accepted procedures in providing a temporary replacement pair until repairs could be made,” said Mr Taylor. The worker rejected this and refused to work. His pay was stopped and others in the trimming department went on strike, said Mr Taylor.
