Hart gives to Namibia
PA Auckland The anti-apartheid organisation Hart has sent a nostrings attached $1486 gift to the South West Africa People’s Organisation. Drought was causing serious food shortages in the region and it was likely that the money would be used to buy food for Namibian children in refugee camps, Hart’s national chairman, Mr John Minto, has said. The money had been sent in spite of a statement from the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, that Hart would not be allowed to remit money overseas. Since 1982, the New Zealand anti-apartheid movement had sent $7500 to S.W.A.P.O. (a Namibian liberation movement which is fighting against South African occupation) and in providing relief and support for refugees.
