Shipping news New director for engineering firm

A marine engineer, Mr Bill Dolan, has been appointed as the managing director of the Lyttelton-based engineering firm, Sinclair Melbourne, Ltd. Mr Dolan, the company's operations manager, will take over from Mr Terry Arthurs, who is leaving to take up a position as executive general manager of a division of the Steel and Tube Group in Wellington. During the eight months Mr Arthurs has been managing director of the company, he has become a well-known figure in the. local shipping industry and has overseen work on several major contracts which have included maintenance and survey of H.M.N.Z.S. Tui and the American research vessel Samuel P. Lee. Mr Arthurs served 22 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, attaining the rank of commander. After leaving the Navy in 1976, he became the New Zealand manager of Hawker Siddeley Engineering, Ltd. A qualified marine and mechanical engineer, Mr Arthurs was also general manager for Andersons Engineering, Ltd, of Christchurch. He joined Sinclair Melbourne in December last year. Mr Dolan joined the company in April after spending tour years working as an engineer in Saudia Arabia, the Yemen Arab Republic, and Nigeria. The company’s development, started under the direction of Mr Arthurs, would continue, with the upgrading of all facilities, Mr Dolan said. He said the company intended to "broaden its horizons” which included the expansion of its boat building programme handling pleasure and inshore craft “and perhaps medium-sized trawlers. Although 40 per cent of the company's work would always rest with the port, 60 per cent of future work would come from outside Lyttelton, he said. “Ten years ago 100 per cent of the work came through the port but since then shipping has become more efficient, crews have reduced and shipping has dropped off. We have got to look in to the broader engineering field and become more involved in it,” said Mr Dolan. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifjca).
