No evidence that Treasury leaked report

PA Wellington The Secretary to the Treasury, Mr B. V. Galvin, said yesterday that he had no evidence to support the allegation that the Treasury leaked the International Monetary Fund report on New Zealand to the “New Zealand Herald” newspaper. Mr Galvin said he inquired into the alleged leak of the LM.F. report “and found no evidence to support the allegation.” Mr Galvin said he continued to have complete confidence in the staff of the Treasury. The confidential report, a copy of which was obtained by the “New Zealand Her-

aid” and was published last week, urged the Government to cut spending, increase indirect taxes, and correct “major underlying imbalances” in the economy. ■ The release of the report, which . was ’ completed in February, put a limited group of senior public servants employed by the Treasury and the Reserve Bank under suspicion. In rejecting the I.M.F. criticisms, the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, said he suspected the report was released by a Labour activist employed in the Public Service. That was being investigated, he said.
