Substantial boost for N.Z. Oaks

Substantial sponsorship and a $lOO,OOO bonus from the Nevele R Stud at Prebbleton has given the stake for New Zealand Oaks a boost. The Nevele R’s co-pro-prietor, Mr Wayne Francis, said the stud’s involvement with the New Zealand Oaks was particularly pleasing. The stake for next year’s contest should be at least $25,000, which is up $lO,OOO on this year’s prize. The Nevele R Stud, which will sponsor the race for at least five years, has instigated a rich bonus system which should attract much interest. Fillies sired this coming breeding season by any of Nevele R’s seven stallions will be eligible for a $lOO,OOO bonus if they win the 198 S New Zealand Oaks. The $lOO,OOO bonus will be available for two ,/ears

after that as well. The Nevele R Stud stallions are: Bo Scot’s Blue Chip, Besta Fella, El Patron, Nat Lobell, Nero’s B B, Sholty Imp and the North Island-based Midshipman. Each sire is expected to serve at least 100 mares in the new season so the chances of the $lOO,OOO bonus being struck are good. Two Nevele R Stud-sired fillies — Armalight and Preferred — have already won the New Zealand Oaks and four — Armalight, Yvette Bromac, Rain Girl and Preferred — have won the DB Flying Fillies Final in the last five years. The Oaks, which dates back to 1948, will now be named the Nevele R Stud New Zealand Oaks. It was taken over this year by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. -3
