Solar Prince appeals in treble leg tonight
JEFF SCOTT
The promising Chertsey pacer, Solar Prince, is likely to be in demand for T.A.B. trebles betters when he contests the third leg, the Dailey’s Fruit Mobile Pace, at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway this evening.
Solar Prince was impressive in winning his debut over tonight’s distance (mobile 2000 m) at Oamaru on May 12, winning easily after covering extra ground in the running to record a respectable 2min 33.8 s for the distance. He followed up that effort almost two weeks later with a game second to Nardin Lustre at Addington over an extra 600 m and in spite of drawing the second line tonight, still appears a leading chance.
The Byebye Bill gelding looked forward when winning at the Addington trials nine days ago. Cu Nim has shown improvement in his latest racing, winning well over 2300 m (mobile) at Blenheim two starts back, then being swamped to run fifth at Addington on July 7 after making a big run to lead at the 500 m, and should go well again. Scottish Win, a speedy son of Scottish Hanover, is another likely to be in
the firing line throughout. An open field is carded to contest the first leg of the T.A.B. treble, the Carpet Mill Products Handicap. Armbro Almont, a stablemate of Scottish Win in Eddie Cowie’s West Melton team, probably has more ability than most for this. He was unable to make any impression at Addington on July 7 over 2600 m from 40m behind, however the extreme distance of 3200 m, even from the same handi-
cap, should be more in his favour. The consistent Ashburton trotter, Globe Tour, which pressed Johnny Courteil to a head in the corresponding event on July 9, is the likely favourite and should take beating again. Supreme Time — an unlucky third last time behind Johnny Courteil and Globe Tour — Roman Guy, Hurricane Jill and perhaps Falcon Lord, which has ability on his day, are other possibilities.
Gold and Black, which paced a creditable race for third when having her first race since December on July 9, could overcome a bad draw to win the Paul Renwick Joinery Mobile Stakes. Other prospects include Smooth Sally, a respectable sixth in her debut nearly a fortnight ago, Bureaucrat, a smart qualifier, and Torpedo, which paced a useful race for third at the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting earlier this month.
