Robberies to pay tax

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney A businessman who robbed seven West Australian banks and netted more than $31,000 ($NZ43,000) in eight months has blamed the taxation department for his crime spree.

Counsel for the defendant told the Supreme Court that the businessman, aged 51, donned a false grey beard and used a replica revolver to raid the banks after the tax department had told him to beg, borrow, or steal the several thousand dollars he owed in overdue employee tax deductions. Counsel said the financially stressed defendant had been easily affected by the comment.
