Public readings planned

PA Tauranga An unusual short story festival at which winning stories will be read aloud at the prize-giving will be held in Tauranga in November. Organising the $lOOO competition is the Tauranga Writers’ Group, which has sponsorship from Tauranga’s Radio BOP and Trusteebank Bay of Plenty. First prize will be $5OO, with $lOO each for five runners-up. A spokesman for the

organisers, Mrs Bronwyn Elsmore, said many short story contests were held each year but the public rarely saw the work. “In this contest the six best entries at least will be publicly read during a festival evening,” she said. The contest is open to any New Zealand resident. The subject is open, but stories must be set in New Zealand and also be suitable for broadcasting. Mrs Elsmore said entries had to be original work.
