Triples to Hornby

The Hornby W.M.C. trio of Leon McLennan, Bruce Grav and Hugh Seales halted the St Albans-Shirley W.M.C. dominance of Canterbury W.M.C. indoor bowling events when they defeated Grant Lange, David Philpott and Colin Lange, 8-7, in the triples final on Sunday. An early break gave McLennan a 6-2 lead after five ends, but a succession of singles took the score to 7-7 with one end to play. Lange moved the jack with his first bowl but was unable to run McLennan’s shot bowl out with his last. McLennan’s team played consistent bowls throughout the final. Results:— Last 8 mats: P. McDonald 5, N. Packman 4; L. McLennan 8, N. Tomlinson 7; G. Lange 12, T. Rice 6; A. Roberts 9, K. Armstrong 4. Semi-finals: McLennan 13, McDonald 2; Lange 8, Roberts 5. Final: McLennan 8, Lange 7. One of Canterbury’s most consistent indoor bowlers, Ken Avis (Hornby W.M.C.) was presented with his Canterbury W.M.C. Indoor Bowls Association Gold Star recently. This award signifies five centres titles and is held at present by only three other bowlers, Leon McLennan, Bruce Gray and Hugh Seals, also from the Hornby W.M.C.
