Kiwis start climb

NZPA staff correspondent Auckland

One year and five days after the historic victory over Australia, New Zealand’s rugby league players take on Britain in the first of three tests in which they hope will be the latest step in their climb to world supremacy. At Carlaw Park tomorrow, the New Zealand side resumes its international campaign against a dispirited British team, with the aim of establishing itself as the second best in the world, ready to take on the champion, Australia, in a series next year. Only a year ago in Brisbane, the Kiwis, under their recently appointed coach, Graham Lowe, beat Australia, 19-12, in

their first win over the transTasman neighbour since a oneoff test in 1971.

But Mr Lowe said yesterday that that win is his biggest worry for this month’s series against Britain. “The message is to forget last year, because that victory will not give New Zealand any points start for Saturday’s match.

My main concern is any complacency which might rub off onto the players because of the win in Australia last year. It won’t give us a start against Great Britain on Saturday,” said Mr Lowe.

“They are better than the last side which came out to New Zealand and I believe Great Britain will be a lot harder to beat than Australia.
