Child assaulted

PA Auckland The vicious attack by an adult man on a girl, aged two, was almost beyond belief, said a High Court judge in Auckland when he jailed the defendant for a year. Mr Justice Tompkins had earlier heard how Enuake Joe Cumming, aged 21, unemployed, of Ellerslie, had dragged the child by her hair, punched her about the face and body with a clenched fist, thrown her against a door then held her down and threatened her with a knife.

The knife penetrated the child’s clothing and caused a cut below her shoulder blade, said his Honour. He warned that anyone who ill treated young children would be dealt with severely by the courts.

Cumming had pleaded guilty to assaulting the child and the child’s mother on May 18. His Honour ordered that the names of the two complainants be not published. The attack on the child happened because Cumming was annoyed about her behaviour. When the child’s mother intervened she was struck with an empty bottle, gripped around the neck and her head struck on the floor.
