Two titles

Karl Entwistle, one of Canterbury’s most promising table tennis players, further enhanced his reputation by winning two titles at the North Island championships in Lower Hutt last weekend.

Entwistle, a fifth form pupil at Shirley Boys’ High School, and a member of the New Zealand under-15 team which played in Australia last May, won the under-16 boys singles title when he comfortably beat the Otago player, Chris Sparrow, 21-10, 21-12. He followed that effort by sharing the boys doubles crown with the promising Colin Gin, of Auckland. In the final, they beat Barry Sears, of Hutt Valley, and Brent Irving, of Wellington, 21-19, 21-12. Entwistle and Gin have the makings of a more than useful combination — both

are New Zealand under-14 doubles titleholders. Entwistle shared the boys doubles with his provincial team-mate, Blair Lockhart, while Gin and Sharon Coad, of Auckland, hold the mixed doubles title, won in Auckland last August. The durable Canterbury veteran, Thelma May, picked up the women’s over--45 singles title, beating Jean Radford, of Kapiti, 22-24, 21-14, 21-14, in the final.

The other Canterbury success came from Jan Morris, the New Zealand representative. She won the open women’s singles, beating the experienced Wellington player, Ann Gyongyos, in the final, but only after a lengthy battle. Miss Morris, who was ranked No. 1 for the championships, won the match, 21-14, 21-17,19-21,18-21 21-11.
