Stewart Island Key to the city

Invercargill has much to offer in its own right, but it is perhaps as gateway to Stewart Island that it attracts most tourists. Stewart Island is 32km from the mainland and only 20 minutes flying time from Invercargill. Accommodation can be arranged at the world’s most southerly pub — the South Seas Hotel — and camping sites and cabins are also available. Most of the island’s 460 residents live at Halfmoon Bay, and the 50-boat fishing fleet is anchored there.

A variety of walks can be undertaken from Halfmoon Bay to places of historic and scenic interest, while the less energetic visitor can see the Forest Service display at the information centre, where a stuffed example of the rare native parrot, the kakapo, is on show. The Halfmoon Bay museum contains a fascinating collection of information about the island’s past, when whaling, sealing and timber milling were the main industries. Today, fishing is the most important activity.
