Germany’s beer laws challenged

NZPA-AFP Brussels West Germany will have to let in foreign beers containing chemicals, if the European Economic Community’s Commission has its way. The Commission lodged yesterday a complaint at the European Court in Luxemburg against West German legislation dating from 1516 declaring that beer must contain malt, hops, yeast, water, and nothing

else. In particular, it must show no trace of chemicals. But foreign brewers complained, and the Commission alleges that the West German rules upset fair trading. In Bonn, the Agriculture Minister, Mr Ignaz Kiechle, said, “The West German Government is thinking of the beer drinkers’ health and not of staving off competition. We hope to win this case.”
