Mill strike hope

PA Auckland The New Zealand Steel Development company hopes that 1500 construction workers who struck on Tuesday in protest about fumes on the worksite will return today. The workers, who

claimed that fumes were wafting over the Glenbrook expansion project site from the main stock of the nearby mill plant, will meet this morning to learn the results of discussions yesterday between union delegates, management, and the Health Department.

Above: Memories of past swims were evoked yesterday for Mr John Hendon, chief draughtsman at the Municipal Electricity Department, when he visited the old Tepid Swimming Bath in Manchester Street. The bath, in the south wing of the department’s main building, is being demolished to make room for building extensions. Members of the Ferrymead Historic Trust will salvage some building materials. The bath, built before 1920, was the original public swimming pool in Christchurch. Right: The Tepid Swimming Bath as it was in the early 19205.
