Arbitration backlog to take time to clear

PA Wellington With a Government in limbo, it could be some time before the Arbitration Court’s backlog clears significantly. A number of options for clearing the Court’s clogged channels have been identified, said the assistant secretary (industrial relations) of the Labour Department, Mr Ralph Stockdill, yesterday. But the election had inevitably delayed Ministerial consideration of those options, he said. The Shop Employees’ Union revealed on Tuesday

that the Court had a backlog of 256 cases waiting to be heard. Wellington is the worsthit centre, with 80 applications waiting, and Auckland is next with 55. It has been estimated that it would take 193 days of sittings to clear the total backlog. The court registrar, Mr John Hall, said yesterday, that consideration had been given to the case made by Auckland employers in January for a separate arbitration court to be established there to service the northern industrial district.
