Mated ewe prices rise at special sale

Prices of mated ewes at a special sale at the Addington market yesterday were $3 to $4 ahead of prices received at recent Tuesday store sheep sales. A big gallery of buyers followed the offering of 15,750 in-lamb two-tooths and aged ewes, the first time a special sale of breeding ewes has been held at Addington at this time of the year. A good quality yarding, combined with a keen demand, ensured the sale was a success. Prices were generally better than had been expected. Several lines of well-bred capital stock ewes sold at realistic prices and looked good buying compared with the money paid for many pens of one-year, low-mouth ewes. Sheep carrying a good fleece of wool also sold better than some well-bred, better quality shorn types. Late in the sale demand dropped away. Most good quality, heavily woolled aged ewes made more than $24, medium quality ranged from $l9 to $23, and one-year ewes mostly between $l6 and $l9. A big line of mixed age Coopworths from Strowan Pas-

tures, Ltd, Waiau, sold to $27.40, and C. D. B. Douglas, Amberley, sold mixed-age Border-Corriedales and Corriedales to $26.60. Coopworths from L. G.
