Party’s bid for TV time backed

PA Auckland The Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, says that he sympathises with the bid by Mana Motuhake for free television time. Mr Tauroa has said that in response to a complaint by Mana Motuhake’s leader, Mr Matiu Rata, he had written to Mr lan Cross, the chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation. In the letter, the text of which was release yesterday by Mr Rata, Mr Tauroa said that having considered the B.C.N.Z. criteria for the allocation of free time he could understand the difficulty of accommodating Mana Motuhake. However, Mr Tauroa said

that Mana Motuhake had five candidates in general electorates as well as the four Maori seats and its policies affected New Zealanders as a whole. “This in my opinion makes them deserving of consideration,” he says. “This applies not only to Mana Motuhake but to many smaller political groups. “While I support Mr Rata, there is little time left for election campaigning. Perhaps it would be more in keeping with New Zealand’s fair play tradition to allow some time for Mana Motuhake and other smaller groups.” Mr Rata said he welcomed Mr Tauroa’s response.
