Canterbury avenges loss

Canterbury avenged an earlier loss when it beat 4ZA Southland, 47-42, in a lacklustre, scrappy Hertz women’s basketball game at Cowles Stadium yesterday. Canterbury virtually led all the way but poor passing and slow build-up play often meant that Southland was able to regroup its defence, making Canterbury work harder than necessary for points. Canterbury led 13-6 after 13 minutes, but Southland came back swiftly to trail 19-22 at half time. Canterbury again dominated the early stages of the second half but in trying to utilise a full bench of 12 players and give some younger players league experience, lost too much possession to lively Southland guards. Southland capitalised on the possession and threatened Canterbury with well taken baskets. Diane Martin and Shona Richards rescued Canterbury with some intelligent counter-attacking play. Canterbury’s shooting efforts were again badly astray with Martin topping the sheet with 12 energetic points. Angela Pule, Jackie Cook, and Richards all worked soundly for little reward. Pauline Flanders used her height to advantage. For Southland Liz Corkery

capped off a fine second half effort with a three point shot from seven metres. The basket caught the referees off guard and Southland was eventually awarded its three points. Tania Wells and Lyn Clark also worked hard for Southland. Canterbury’s win gives it equal fourth place in the southerrn division of the league with Palmerston North, with Otago taking third place. Nelson maintained its perfect record in the southern division, soundly beating Southland, 74-22 on Saturday. Nelson, along with

Porirua which only lost one game (to Nelson) qualify for the league final playoff on July 13 to 15. Hamilton maintained its unbeaten record in the northern division trouncing Rotorua 72-40 while North Shore ehanced its chances of making the final, edging out Whangarei 70-68. Scorers were.— Canterbury 47 (D. Martin 12, A. Pule 7, S. Richards 6, S. Bennie 6, M. Cassidy 5, J. Cook 4, R. Walker 3, M. Costain 2, S. Akkerman 2). Southland 42 (P. Flanders 11, L. .
