NZ sharemarket opens mixed
The New Zealand sharemarket opened the week on a mixed note in busy trading yesterday. Turnover was helped by the special sale of 3,244,900 Williams Property shares at 115 c each, in contrast to the market price, which ranged between 120 c and 125 c. Steel and Tube rose 15c to 260 after announcing higher earnings and a bonus issue, but Allflex Holdings was unchanged on a similar performance. Walker and Hall improved a further 20c to close to 780. ANZ Banking Group, NZ Forest Products, NZI Corporation, and Wattie were among the leading issues to firm, but Alex Harvey, Carter Holt, Feltex, and Dalgety Crown were easier. Fletcher Challenge was steady at 277 c. The Barclays industrial index lost 1.88 points to 1289.07.
