Jail for importing drugs
PA Auckland An American has been jailed for two years and fined $lO,OOO after being convicted of a charge of importing 4.5 kilograms of hashish. Michael St Germain, aged 27, a carpenter, appeared for sentence yesterday in the High Court at Auckland before Mr Justice Hellyer, who recommended that he be deported at the end of his sentence.
St Germain admitted importing the cannabis preparation hidden inside the polystyrene lining of a windsurfer when he arrived in Auckland from Hawaii on April 5. 'His Honour said he accepted that St Germain was only a courier and had nothing to do with packing . the cannabis. It was, said his Honour, a substantial amount of hashish which could have caused
untold harm in New Zealand. “We are fighting a tide of drugs coming into the country, and fighting them because of the misery and unhappiness they can cause,” he said. “People like you who bring them in are destroying young people here.”
