Toddler Prince gets behind wheel
NZPA-AP London Prince William was given a miniature Jaguar car as a second birthday present yesterday. The little red XJS Cabriolet, built by three apprentices at Jaguar’s Coventry factory, is powered by a small electric motor to allow the little Prince to drive safely. “It’s not fast enough to knock down a corgi,” said one person who had seen it. Jaguar, which is achieving record sales and is about to be sold back to the private sector, is keeping very quiet about the car. All that a company spokesman will say is, “It follows a visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales to Jaguar earlier this year. The apprentices have been delighted to be involved with the project.”
Estimates of its cost have ranged from £lOOO to £60,000 (about $2192$128,000).
Since it was the first birthday Prince Charles and the Princess have spent with their young son they were determined to make it happy for him. Last year they reluctantly left him at home while they toured Canada. This time the Princess was spending the day with Prince William at Highgrove, their country home in Gloucestershire, where they had gone earlier after a day at Royal Ascot and polo in Windsor Great Park.
