Church ‘cannot give more’ to needy
PA Auckland The Dean of Auckland, the Very Rev. John Rymer, says he does not believe the Anglican Church can afford to give more to the needy. In a letter sent last week to the Anglican clergy of the Auckland diocese, the Archbishop of New Zealand,, the Most Rev. Paul Reeves, and his two assistants, the Rt Rev. Godfrey Wilson and the Rt Rev. Edward Buckle, have said the Church should share more of its assets.
Dean Rymer said yesterday that the Church also had to look to the future. It should use its assets in a way which would benefit the people of both today and the future.
“I am reminded of a church in New York which 100 years ago invested its assets, and such are the rewards now that it supports and maintains 20 poor parishes in New York,” he said.
“The Church has to find a balance between the demands of the present and those that will occur in the future. I could not be building a cathedral now if I did not hold this view.”
