Duran calls it quits

NZPA-AP Panama City

The three-times world champion, Roberto Duran, announced yesterday that he is retiring from the ring after being defeated by Tommy Hearns.

“I don’t think about boxing any more. I am thinking now about having fun, good clean fun,” Duran told a news conference at Panama

City airport, when he returned from Miami, Florida. Hearns defeated Duran by technical knock-out last Saturday. In his 17 years as a professional in the ring, Duran, who is nickmaned “Mano de Piedra” or “Rock Fist,” won 76 of 82 fights. He was successively lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight champion.
