Attitudes to China

Sir, — The article by Giles Mathews (June 12) made me surprised that there was still somebody who regarded China as a barbarian country and a cultural desert. I do not believe that these absurd arguments will convince most New Zealanders, especially the people in Christchurch. China is still a less developed country, and rather poor, but she is never barbarian and by no means a cultural desert. If culture is sex, violence and crime, China is surely a desert in contrast to some Western countries. I believe that most of the foreign people who have been in China and are familiar with China realise this. I also believe that New Zealand’s people understand that to develop the friendship between the two countries will benefit both people. Chinese people have soaring aspirations and abilities. They certainly will keep pace with and eventually surpass advanced world levels. China will certainly make a bigger contribution to human progress. This cannot be prevented by ridicule. — Yours, etc., Y. L. SU. June 18, 1984.
