Grain silos set to be commissioned

The Lyttelton Harbour Board will be keeping a close watch on the performance of its new grain loading complex when it is commissioned tomorrow.

The bulk carrier Major Basil is due to berth at the Cashin Quay No. 3 berth tomorrow morning to begin loading 9000 tonnes of barley for export to Singapore. The 15,573-ton vessel will be the first to use the new grain silos and loading system recently installed at Te Awaparahi Bay. The two grain silos were shifted from their former site at the No. 1 breastwork earlier this year to allow larger vessels to load grain through the board's bulk loading facility at Cashin Quay. Loading of the silos was completed yesterday morning in readiness for the commissioning. Both silos now hold the maximum combined quantity of barley of 1800 tonnes. The board’s traffic manager, Mr David Jones, expects the facility to achieve a silo to ship loading of 250 tonnes per hour. As some of the equipment will be used for the first time under load, the shipment is considered to be the first big test for the facility, according to the chief engineer. Mr John Bushell. The board would be monitoring the loading and making any necessary adjustments. The Major Basil, making her first call at the port, will be arriving from Timaru where she will load 12,000 tonnes of barley. The ship’s agent, Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd, said a second vessel was due to load barley at Lyttelton in the future. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Dunedin (S.C.N.Z.).
