Four French films

During the next month, the Academy will screen four French films — several of which were shown at the recent film festival at the Avenue, Riccarton.

Starting tomorrow, for the first week, is “Les Choix des Armes” (“Choice of Weapons”), directed by Alan Comeau, who has gained experience working with such other top directors as Roger Corman, Costa Gavras and Jose Giovanni. Comeau’s first film, “France Societe Anonyme” (1973) won much acclaim. He then made two films with Yves Montand, and another with Patrick Dewaere, “Serie Noire” (1979). “Les Choix des Armes” stars Gerard Depardieu and Yves Montand in a story about fugitives from the law.

Early one morning, two men jump into a car outside

a prison and make a speedy getaway, setting Depardieu on the run from the police. Fifty kilometres away, a wealthy studowner (Montand) gets up to check on a mare that has fallen sick. He has recently given up a life of gangsterism to spend his time with his wife (Catherine Deneuve.) Up until now, Montand’s life has been fulfilling. Little does he suspect that Depardieu is on his way. The three other films are: “One Wild Moment” (June 29 to July 5), in which two life-long friends decide to spend their holidays on the Riviera; but because of a mix-up in parental arrangements, each is obliged to bring along his teen-age daughter.

"Coup de Torchon” (July 6-12), which is set in a little African town in 1938. The

place has only one officer of the law (Philippe Noiret), and a bad one at that. His wife makes fun of him and his brother-in-law, who is even worse, until Noiret decides to clean up the town.

“Charles and Lucie” (from July 13), in which a husband and wife, already reduced to poverty by unwise business decisions, find themselves stranded on the Riviera after being taken in by a confidence trickster.
