Nurse for boat people
A Christchurch nurse, Miss Pamela O’Neill, will leave New Zealand tomorrow to work for the
New Zealand Red Cross Society with Vietnamese boat people on the Malaysian island of Pulau Bidong. All boat people who land on the coast of Malaysia are taken to the island. They wait there in the hope of
being accepted for citizenship in another country. Many people have to wait several years.
Miss O’Neill, who used to work at Christchurch Women’s Hospital, will work in an old, wooden, two-storey building containing only basic requirements. She will spend six months on the island.
