Maori priest for Sydney Maoris

PA Wellington An Anglican Maori priest has been appointed to serve the estimated 30,000 Maoris living in Sydney, the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt Rev. Whakahuihui Vercoe, announced yesterday. He will be the Ven. Kingi Ihaka, who has been vicargeneral of the Bishopric of Aotearoa since 19811 He will begin work in Sydney on October 20. “The appointment is a historic one in that the first Anglican mission to the Maori people originated in Sydney in 1814,” Bishop Vercoe said. “It is estimated that there are now 30,000 Maori people living in Sydney and the appointment has come about as the result of a request by maori people in Sydney for a priest to live and work among them. The appointment has been made in close consultation with the authorities in the Anglican diocese of Sydney,” he said.
