Leader of party to visit N.Z.

From BRUCE ROSCOE in Tokyo The chairman of the Japanese Democratic Socialist Party will visit New Zealand next week for talks on relations between Japan and New "ealand, and to strengthen ft o.dship with the Labour Pai ‘he international division g. . ' D.S.P. has said.

Mr Ryosaku Sasaki, the party’s chairman, will hold talks on June 20 with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Lange, and the Acting Prime Minister, Mr McLay. He will be accompanied by two of his party’s Upper House members. The Democratic Socialists, who broke away from the Japan Socialist Party in 1959, have 39 Lower House seats and 11 in the Upper House. Officially formed in 1960, the party was launched on a platform of promoting welfare for all groups of workers without favouring particular labour unions. It aimed to achieve socialism within parliamentary procedures, not by revolution. In practice, however, the D.S.P. has been seen to act in concert with the ruling Liberal Democrat Party, prompting the criticism that it is a virtual L.D.P. satellite. It has been rumoured

recently that the party may form a coalition with the L.D.P. Mr Sasaki will also visit Australia and Fiji.
