Clipper well abandoned

The Clipper 1 oil exploration well being drilled bj the BP-Shell-Todd consortium off the coast of South Canterbury has been plugged and abandoned. Some shows of gas were found in thin sandstone layers below 4000 m, but they were not considered to be of commercial significance. the consortium said yesterday. The companies — BP Oil Exploration Company N.Z.. Ltd, Shell Petroleum Mining Company, Ltd. and Todd Canterbury Oil, Ltd — said the well had reached a total depth of 4742 m. A spokesman said four thin gas sands had been found between 4261 m and 4310 m but the total thick-

ness of these was only 19m That was too thin to contain hydrocarbon accumulation of commercial significance and no flow testing was considered necessary.

Although the traces were not of commercial significance. they were the first found in the Canterbury Basin and gave encouragement for assessing future work in the area, (he spokesman said. The consortium is now studying the Clipper 1 results and other data in order to decide on its future programmes in the basin. The Atlantic Drilling Company's rig Benreoch. which drilled Clipper I. will be released by the consortium in the next few days, said the spokesman.
