Sir, — Has the writer of your editorial on India (June 12) spent time in India or studied its history and politics in depth or did he base his sweeping and bleak assessment on Western news reports? Has he studied Sikh groups and their demands, negotiations between them and central Government, the action of the group in the temple and views of non-Sikhs in the area? And their study of words and events which enables them to group under the word “massacre” the shooting of unarmed and unresisting people and a battle between two heavilyarmed groups — has this also been deep and careful? You excelled yourself — in the same issue a swipe at China, also, albeit borrowed. At least I did not think better of you — this is. alas, what I have come to expect in your treatment of areas other than U.S.A, and Europe. — Yours, etc., JIM WILSON, June 12, 1984.
