Germans sail to victory
NZPA-PA Halifax Two West German ships were first and second in the Tall Ships race from Bermuda to Halifax, race officials announced yesterday. The 25m West German sailing vessel, Carola, was , first over-all and another West German ship, the 14m Swantje, was second. Also yesterday, sailors and citizens gathered for a memorial service for the 19 people lost when one of the racing ships, the British barque Marques, sank during a gale on June 3 about 125 km from Bermuda. Nine of the 28 people aboard were rescued. The British Navy’s 18.2 m cutter, Dasher, which arrived in Halifax first, took third place.
