Coup bid fails

About 20 soldiers and civilians have been arrested in Upper Volta after an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the radical leader, Mr Thomas Sankara, last month, Radio Ouagadougou said yesterday. It said civilians arrested included two planning ministers from previous regimes, a former ambassador to Ghana, and a former head of the country’s football federation. The soldiers included Lieutenants Maurice Ouedraogo, from the artillery group, and Moumouni Ouedraogo, formerly in charge of street cleaning in Ouagadougou. Mr Sankara took over last August, ousting President Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo.— Ouagadougou, Upper Volta.
