Two $l00,000 fires suspected arson
PA Auckland A fire suspected by the police to have been deliberately lit caused $lOO,OOO damage at the Royal Road Primary School in Massey, Auckland, on Monday night. One classroom was destroyed and two others were
damaged. The police believe that a fire which gutted a Levin restaurant the same night could also have been deliberately lit. Volunteer firemen, called out at 10 p.m., managed to contain the fire from spreading to business premises on either side. The restaurant’s owner, Mr David Vodanovich, said he thought the damage would cost close to $lOO,OOO. Detective Sergeant G. H. E. Evans said yesterday that there was evidence someone had broken into the building, and that the extensive damage indicated the fire had been “deliberately encouraged.”
