Aust. market falls

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easy yesterday under selling pressure following a sudden drop in the international bullion price and a sharply lower Wall Street close. The all ordinaries index fell 13.9 points to 666.0, the all industrials marker went down 8.9 to 921.3 and the all resources index, 17.3 to 465.9.

Trading was highlighted by dealings in EZ Industries, for which North Broken Hill made a take-over bid at $6 a share, with a shares-and-cash alternative.

EZ added 150 c to 600 in Melbourne, and 130 c to 590 in Sydney. North Broken Hill was discounted 15c to 220.

Resource stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off. BHP lost 34c to a new low for the year of 954, its contributing shares fell 20c to 620 and CSR 15c to 297. In the metals and golds sector, 30c cuts took Central Norseman to 540, Emperor to 360, GMK to 900 and Poseidon to 410.

CRA shed 29c to 485 and MIM, 22c to 276, and 20c

declines put Placer at 1800 and Western Mining at 320. Santos fell 28c to 560, Genoa. 15c to 110 and Weeks Australia, 12c to 95. Ampol Exploration was at 340, Crusader at 230 and Moonie at 260, all after 10c falls. The banks were weaker, with Westpac down 10c to 355 and ANZ and National both 8c to 510 and 320.

Elders IXL led the merchants and agents index down with a 15c slip to 365. In the transport group, TNT eased 4c to 164 and Brambles 3c to 265. News Corp pulled the media marker back with a 10c retreat to 940, while the Advertiser dropped 5c to 180. ICI was marked up 3c to 188 after its interim earnings improvement.
