Kaiapoi rates rise 1.48 per cent

Kaiapoi ratepayers will face an over-all increase of 1.48 per cent in their rates this year. The Kaiapoi Borough Council formally recommended the adoption of its estimates on Monday. The estimates allow for a 2.459 per cent increase in the general rate but no increase in the water rate or sewer and refuse charges.

Preliminary draft estimates, considered by the council last week, had been based on a 6.75 per cent increase in the general rate and an over-all increase of 4.02 per cent. The owner of a property with a land value of $7OOO will pay $242.94 in the gen-

eral rate this year, compared with $237.11 last year. The water rate will remain at $54.46, the sewer charge will be |52.50 and the refuse charge §37.50. A special rate of 0.9209 cents in the dollar will also be struck to cover three water supply leans. Cr A. H. Blackie said that too much had been trimmed from the estimates. A 1.48 per cent increase was too low when money had to be taken away from buying books for the library and developing the Kaiapoi Domain. He said a 4 per cent increase would have been reasonable.

Cr Margaret Cleland supported Cr Blackie. She said she could not see why

money had to be trimmed from the domain, library and other projects if the increase was to be so low.

Cemetery and camping ground charges will also rise.

A single plot at lie Kaiapoi cemetery will rise in price from $35 to $5O, and a double plot from $5O to $75. The burial charge will increase from $75 to $9O and interment of ashes will cost $l5 instead of $12.50. The Town Clerk, Mr R. N. McCabe, said that most charges were now the same as those charged by the Rangiora Borough Council. Most camping ground charges will rise 20 per cent.
