No extra money for school flags

By OLIVER RIDDELL in Wellington The costs of flags and flagpoles to implement the policy of the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, of having New Zealand flags fly at all schools will be met from existing financial allocations. This was the Minister’s response to a question in Parliament by Mr S. J. Rodger (Lab., Dunedin North) on how much the scheme would cost. Mr Wellington said flags and flagpoles had been a standard feature of schools for many years.

Regulations for honouring :he flag in schools were

promulgated in November, 1941, and still existed.

These regulations applied to primary and intermediate schools, which were required to honour the flag on Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Empire Day, the Sovereign's birthday, Trafalgar Day, and Armistice Day. Mr Wellington said some of these days were no longer so significant to young children and observance of some of the ceremonies had fallen into abeyance over the years. Nevertheless, the regulations were still there. This meant that schools could claim the costs of flags and flagpoles to observe them.
