Homeless dogs
Sir,—Referring to your photograph and article (June 12) about the Dog Watch group having more surplus dogs from the pounds than the three volunteer ladies can handle: would it not be appropriate for the local bodies to provide some holding kennels which would allow the volunteers time to find new homes? The spate of unwanted dogs is undoubtedly the result of totally inadequate laws and controls by this Government and local bodies, and is everyone’s responsibility. Until some enlightened legislation is passed the least that local bodies could do would be to help these few concerned citizens who give so unstintingly of their time and energies. Shooting unwanted dogs in seven days if unclaimed is a “cop-out,” not a solution to the problem. — Yours, etc., J. SHARP. June 12, 1984.
