‘Pass the Salt’ wins award

“Pass the Salt,” the threeminute, question-and-answer programme broadcast on Radio New Zealand community stations on Sunday mornings, has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 1984 International Radio Festival of New York. The programme has been on air for six years, and the format was devised by Errol Pike, a former head of religious broadcasts at Radio New Zealand and now station manager of the Hastings community station, 77ZK. Errol Pike is a cohost of the programme with lan Grant, national president of Youth for Christ and host of the Christian television programme, “The Herd.” The programmes are based on letters sent in by listeners, lan Grant answering the questions with a straight Christian message while Errol Pike plays the role of devil’s advocate. The New York award is further international recognition for the programme, which late last year also won a Pater Award for the best religious programme on commercial radio in New Zealand and Australia.
