Antarctic drop this month
Urgently needed repair parts, fresh food, and mail will be airdropped to the winter inhabitants of McMurdo Station, Scott Base, and South Pole Station in Antarctica later this month. A United States Air Force Starlifter will make drops on June 21 and June 23. Only the first drop will include South Pole Station. This will be the sixth consecutive year that the midwinter airdrops have been made in Antarctica by the United States Air Force (rom Christchurch. The people receiving the cargo have had no links with the
outside world, other than by radio, since February. The next flight to land in Antarctica again will do so in August. A United States Air Force McDonnell Douglas Extender tanker will refuel the Stariifter in mid-air during its airdrop flights, necessary if the Starlifter is to fly to the South Pole. Captain Brian Shoemaker, the commander of the United States Naval Support Force, Antarctica, will oversee the mission, which will also involve servicemen of the United States Army, Air Force, and the New Zealand Army.
