New Auck. strikes
PA Auckland Workers campaigning for a return to free wage bargaining continued their protest stoppages yesterday. Hotel workers, timber industry employees, and storemen and packers were among striking workers in the Auckland region. About 600 members of the Northern Storepersons and Packers’ Union, who work for three freight-forwarding firms, have walked off the job until Tuesday. All union workers at the Auckland-based plants of N.Z. Forest Products in Penrose and Te Papapa
stopped work for 24 hours in protest against the wage freeze. The 133 engineers, storemen and packers employed by the battery manufacturer, Union Carbide, also remain on strike. The company’s chief executive, Mr John Heaslip, said all types of batteries produced by the company were now scarce. Another 100 workers at New Zealand Steel Development, Ltd, who had been on strike over a safety issue at the Waikato Heads mine site will return to work on Tuesday.
