New tanker handed over
PA Auckland A new coastal tanker for the New Zealand trade has been handed over to the Union Steam Ship Company at a shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan. Mrs Joyce Hannigan, of Auckland, wife of a Union Company director, formally named the $3O million ship Taiko at a ceremony in Nagasaki yesterday. The 30,000-ton tanker will make her maiden voyage to New Zealand later this month. She will replace the Erne, one of four coastal tankers which make regular deliveries of oil and petrol to New Zealand ports from the Marsden Point refinery. Taiko is Maori for black petrel, a seabird.
