Kirkness after title
In the absence of the defending champion, Dale Kwok, of Otago, and the outstanding cueist, Dave Meredith, of Canterbury, the South Island snooker title might be won for the third time by Brian Kirkness this week-end. Kirkness, the runner-up to Meredith in the South Island billiards championship last Sunday, is a skilful player and has won the Canterbury snooker title on seven occasions. The main dangers to Kirkness appear to be two former South Island cham-
pions, Lew Adams and Doug Hallum, both of Canterbury, and the runner-up last year, Maurie Kerrell, of Otago. Another Canterbury pair, Stan Maffey and Bob Karaitiana, start the tournament as the provincial champion and open champion, respectively. Section play in the $5OO tournament, sponsored by the Christchurch Silver Refining and Bullion Co., starts today, with quarter-finals at the Cuthberts Green rooms tomorrow evening. The semifinals and final will be played on Monday.
