Pronto King fancied at Wingatui
By
JEFF SCOTT
Pronto King will return to the scene of his five lengths Dunedin Guineas win last October when he contests the S. N. Brown Print Handicap, the T.A.B. trifecta event, at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting today, and should rate high on the list of fancies. The Riccarton-trained Pronto colt showed mastery of a heavy Wingatui track when successful in the guineas (1600 m and is likely to encounter deep footing again today. Fourth to Gaffa, Lacka Reason and Tanalyse in the New Zealand Two Thousand
Guineas at Riccarton in November, Pronto King resumed after a break of over three months when fifth at Riccarton on April 28, and should have improved sufficiently since then to take beating in today’s 1200 m event for winners of two-to-four races. The top weight, Huff ’N Puff, trained at Gore by Don and Richard Collett, has been a model of consistency this season finishing fourth or closer in six of his seven starts. His form includes two wins both on soft tracks — at 1400 m and last time out at Gore over
1200 m. Grey Dove, a past winner on the track at this distance, performed well at the Riverton Easter meeting, while Follow On has been racing fairly well in open company and may appreciate the drop in class in this. Pinafore has been racing well enough to figure in the finish, while Sharleta tends to mix her form but would only need to reproduce the dash she showed when second to Super Comet at Rangiora two starts back to rate a chance. Top Row races well fresh and appeals for longer odds.
