Submarine bell for museum display
A bell which once belonged to the British submarine L2l is the latest exhibit to go on display at the Lyttelton Historical Museum. It was given to the Christchurch City Council in the early 1930 s as a gift from the Lords of the Admiralty, and for many years was used as a closing Dell for the Botanical Gardens. As the bell had not been in use for some time, the Parks and Reserves Department decided to present it to the Lyttelton Museum after a meeting with the museum’s curator, Mr Baden Norris. Mr Norris said that he planned to use the bell at closing time at the museum. The bell is of gunmetal and quite large. The British L2l was one of 33 in her class and was intended for mine laying operations, Mr Norris said. She was built by Vickers and launched on October 11, 1919. However, she never saw active service and was decommissioned in the 1930 s and sold for scrap in February, 1939. Mr Norris said the museum was pleased to be the recipient of such a fine exhibit.
