Traffic ’copter
Motorists in Christchurch yesterday came under the scrutiny of a Ministry of Transport helicopter, pictured top. Chief Traffic Officer Garth Hames checks the pilot’s route (bottom). Senior officers of the Ministry flew in the helicopter, which was used to monitor conditions on highways in and out of the city. The “eye in the sky” gave traffic officers a good idea of the Queen’s Birthday holiday week-end traffic flow, said a Ministry spokesman last evening. Traffic was medium to heavy, but there were few
problems, he said. The helicopter will be used during daylight hours this week-end as a vantage point to direct officers to areas where there are accidents or delays. Motorists will be told by radio which roads are congested. It is the first time since the Springbok rugby tour of 1981 that the Ministry has used a helicopter for traffic control.
