Halal meat cleared for export

Discussions held this week with officials in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have resulted in New Zealand halal meat continuing to have access to these markets. This results from an agreement between representatives of the New Zealand meat industry and the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (F.1A.N2.). The signatories to the agreement were the Meat Board and F.1.A.N2. and it provides for the latter to certify that New Zealand meat produced for these markets has been slaughtered in the halal manner. Others involved in the discussions were representatives of the Meat Exporters’ Council, the Freezing Companies’ Association, and the Trade and Industry Department. It is expected that the agreements will soon be ratified by the organisations involved.
