Record attempt

A Salvation Army captain has been running more than 100 km a week in training in the last few months in preparation for next month’s attempt on the record for the 331 km run from Greymouth to Christchurch via Lewis Pass. Several years ago Captain Graeme McMurdo jogged the distance in about 106 hours when he was stationed at Greymouth, where he was in charge of the Greymouth Salvation Army. Then Mr Ivan Hawkey ran the distance to raise money for the Christchurch branch of the Crippled Children Society, and cut the record to 90hr 45min. Captain McMurdo will set out from Greymouth at 7 a.m. on June 12, accompanied by his wife, Lorna, and two Salvation Army friends in a motorised caravan. He plans to average 80km to 90km a day by running for about IM hours at a time with a half-hour rest, then take a bigger break from about 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. each morning.
