Anew railway waggon (pictured) which may be used for transporting bulk coal from the West Coast to the Port of Lyttelton, went on display at the port on Friday. The waggon is part of the

new transportation proposal jointly developed by the Railways Corporation and the Lytytelton Harbour Board to improve the handling of West Coast coal. The waggon has been

used at Huntly and can carry 42 tonnes of coal. Details of the joint proposal will be released on the West Coast on Wednesday and in Christchurch on Thursday.

The board's marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said the proposal, to be submitted to the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, was expected to show significant cost savings in the loading of up to 500,000 tonnes of

coal a year from the mine to the ship. The new waggon was taken to the est Coast at the week-end for inspection by representatives of the State Coal Mine.
